A housing association which has been providing homes for those in need celebrated its 50th anniversary at the House of Commons.

Harrow Churches Housing Association (HCHA) marked the half century of work in the borough with a reception yesterday.

Guests included MP for Harrow West Gareth Thomas, MP for Harrow East Bob Blackman, MP for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner Nick Hurd and the Mayors of Harrow and Hillingdon.

Mr Thomas said: “I'm pleased that HCHA has a robust and rosy future ahead, as it grows, I hope it will always have Harrow at its heart as it expands.

“I'm particularly pleased that it is focussed on the needs of Harrows most vulnerable citizens. I think you've done a fantastic job over the past fifty years and look forward to the next fifty.”

The Mayor of Harrow Cllr Ajay Ajay Maru said: “Congratulations to HCHA. This summer I visited one of their schemes St Barnabas and I saw myself what a wonderful job they're doing for elderly Harrow residents.

“We look forward to our continued partnership between HCHA and the council.”

The housing association was found in 1964 by members of some of Harrow’s churches who were concerned over the living conditions of the elderly in the borough.

Barry Ingate, chairman of the association's board, said: “We've grown through exciting times and achieved what we set out to deliver, thanks to our diverse board.

“We're fortunate to have caring and enthusiastic staff to enable us to proceed. We now have over £25m worth of assets and we aim to continue the charitable purposes we were set up for and grow the association.”

Since its foundation the association has expanded, buying land across the area building its own properties providing homes for young people, those with physical disabilities, people with HIV and those requiring extra care.

It has also started proving housing in other London boroughs including Hounslow and Hillingdon.
