The leader of the council opposition group has attacked the Labour administration for 'disgusting' budget cut proposals.

Yesterday Harrow Borough Council announced it would be holding a public consultation on next year's budget.

The Labour administration says in the face of government cuts of £75million over four years, tough decisions would have to be made about council services such as libraries and children services.

In response to yesterday's announcement, Conservative Group leader Cllr Susan Hall attacked Labour's consultation.

She said: "It's quite frankly disgusting for Labour to propose both cuts on this scale and a possible council tax increase the day after confirming they will bring back the chief executive role.

"How can Labour justify closing libraries, cutting street cleaning or stopping care for the vulnerable while restoring the highest-paid job at the council and paying them £25,000 more than the Prime Minister?

"It's yet another example of Labour making poor decisions for Harrow, and it's our residents who are going to suffer through cuts to the services they rely on and rightfully expect.

"Predictably, Labour are blaming the Government, but the council had massive amounts of money left over at end of the last two years - nearly £25 million in total - and is expecting to have money left this year, too.

"In other words it has money to spare, so take Labour's attempts to plead poverty with a big pinch of salt.

"And as for the 'consultation', what Labour are actually doing is giving residents half-truths and dodgy numbers and making them choose between a rock and a hard place."
