A nurse is facing allegations of assaulting a patient and administering drugs when she was not on duty.

Allison Simon faces possible sanctions at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for allegedly assaulting a patient while working in Fletcher Ward, at Northwick Park Hospital.

It is alleged she used inappropriate force on a patient, known as patient A, by placing her hands around his neck and shaking him during a night shift in November 2011.

It is also alleged she kicked him and flicked his right ear several times before pushing him into his bed.

Two days later she is alleged to gave administered drugs to the patient while she was not on duty on the ward.

A panel of three at the hearing at the NMC in Central London today heard from witness and fellow nurse who was on the ward at the time Clifford Gonzalez.

He said patient A was becoming “very aggressive” during the evening and had stuck out at Ms Simon as she tried to move him out of an office chair at the nurses’ station.

She then reportedly shook but the shoulders and then neck before kicking the patient several times and flicking his ears while pushing him back to his bed in a chair.

He said: “Then Ms Simon grabbed him and started shaking him. I was really shocked that this had happened.”

After the alleged incident Mr Gonzalez checked the patient to see if there were any injuries.

He said: “It was my medical opinion the patient needed to be checked afterwards. I felt so sorry for the patient because I thought 'what if it was my father who had been treated like this?'"

The witness then described the incident two nights later when he was in charge of patient A, who had become aggressive.

While trying to calm the man, Ms Simon allegedly came into the room when she was not on duty on that ward and tried to then administer the drug haloperidol used to calm the patients.

Under cross examination Ms Simon’s legal counsel Felicia Davy dismissed the allegations.

She said Mr Gonzalez’s testimony did not match up with statements from two other members of hospital staff he had originally reported the assault to.

And in regards to the administering of the drug she said: “The fact is the situation was not under control and Ms Simon and came to help you and assisted in the administration of the drug.”

The hearing at the Nursing and Midwifery Council will continue tomorrow.
