Hundreds flocked to an annual charity walk to help raise more than £30,000 for a hospital’s redevelopment.

More than 400 people took part in the 12th annual Buttercup Walk to raise money for the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), in Stanmore yesterday.

Gymnast and Olympic medallist Max Whitlock kicked off the day with a performance of his pummel horse skills before the walk was officially started by ten-year-old Buttercup Walk Hero, Alex McCartney.

Mr McCartney, a patient at the hospital, said: “I’m really excited to be here and to open this year’s Buttercup Walk – seeing Max’s performance just now was amazing.”

Chairman of The Buttercup Walk Peter Calder said: “It’s been another successful Buttercup Walk and it’s great to see so many of my patients and lots of happy faces.

“Our fundraising team has worked tirelessly to ensure that today was a success and we’d really like to thank the hundreds of people who came along today to support the RNOH and its charity.

“I’d like to give special thanks to Alex for being our Buttercup Walk Hero and to Max Whitlock for putting on such an incredible performance for us.

“The money raised is going to help make a real difference to the hospital and the patients that are treated here. We look forward to doing it all again next year.”

Money raised from the event will go to The RNOH Charity Redevelopment Appeal, set up to raise £15 million to pay for additional facilities and equipment for the hospital, which is currently undergoing a £90million redevelopment.
