Samantha Cameron praised the “amazing history” of an Edgware-based Asian women’s charity during a reception at Downing Street.

The Prime Minister’s wife met supporters and ambassadors of the Sangam Association of Asian Women to hear about how the charity helps Asian women having difficulty integrating into their new environment.

The charity, based in Burnt Oak Broadway, recently celebrated its 40th anniversary and helps more than 3,000 people every year.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Cameron said: “I first heard about Sangam last year and I was moved by the amazing history of a charity originally established in the 1970s by Asian women for Asian women.

“Sangam hasn’t been afraid to address difficult issues like poverty and domestic violence. It has continued to empower and support women and it is fantastic that you have been recognised so widely.”

Sangam is a really lovely organisation which was built brick by brick by enterprising ladies, mainly from India, forty years back.It is wonderful to see how much they have grown over the past few decades and how they are now catering to so many younger ladies as well.We have all gained so much from them and often been party to many of their ventures,as members.

Their activities are truly reflective of their ideal to serve women in our community and deal with all sorts of difficult and challenging issues such as Domestic Violence and poverty. They are a Charity well worth supporting and conduct many events which reflect the Asian culture, bringing much joy and spreading cheer among all.Do find out more about them and help them evolve even more.

I feel so thrilled to see them at no 10 Downing Street being recognised for the tremendous contributions they make by Samantha Cameron.Hearty congratulations to all of you at SANGAM.Keep up the good works!

You have made us all very, very proud.
