Code of conduct decision a ‘political stitch up’ says councillor Husain Akhtar

Harrow Times: Code of conduct decision a ‘political stitch up’ says councillor Code of conduct decision a ‘political stitch up’ says councillor

A councillor who was ruled to have breached the council code of conduct says the whole process is "a political stitch-up".

A hearing at Harrow Borough Council today found independent councillor Husain Akhtar had breached the code in relation to his involvement with the Harrow Council for Justice (HCJ) website last year.

Cllr Victoria Silver and Cllr Zarina Khalid made complaints about posts made on the website.

In response to the ruling Cllr Akhtar said: “The outcome of the hearing does not surprise me because in my opinion it is nothing more than a political stitch-up."

Cllr Akhtar said he had previously called for the process to be delayed after raising concerns about the standards procedure to the ombudsman.

Cllr Akhtar said: “There was no point for me to participate in the hearing that lacked transparency and fairness.

“I think the hearing outcome sends the wrong message and has done nothing to enhance the credibility of the standards procedures.”

The members of the panel upheld both complaints and agreed Cllr Akthar had breached the council’s code of conduct.

Sanctions against the councillor will include further training on data protection, publication of a notice in the local press informing the public of the breaches and publication of the notice on the council website.

As expected, the outcome is a political stitch up for character assassination.

At the hearing, Conservative Councillor Simon Williams said: "He is hiding behind the secretive HCJ which is a malicious and nasty organisation"

Does the Cllr Williams know that Harrow Council for Justice was formally launched in June 1992 at the Civic Centre, Harrow? The launch was very well attended by the Members and officers of Harrow Borough and by the representatives of the local and national community organisations. All political parties took part.

The only problem for all political parties is that HCJ is involved in campaigning for effective ways and meaningful opportunities for disadvantaged people to influence the decisions that affect them, particularly in areas such as local government services, policing, the criminal justice system, health and community care and education.
HCJ is not funded by any local authority or the government, therefore, its hands are not tied up. HCJ will and would not give up its principals for any political party.

Cllr Williams should visit http://www.hcrj.org.

He seems to have a problem with women in authority maybe he would rather they cover themselves from head to toe and be silent?

Or, Pravin Shah, is it not more likely that he's been caught red handed? Read the statement from the lawyer in the other article:

"Cllr Akhtar said he had not sent any of the documents himself and had given a statement that he had not been involved with the HCJ since he left in 2010.

However Mr Curran concluded that his statement was untrue and said: “In my opinion he has acted in a manner that could reasonably be regarded as bringing his office into disrepute.”

So you're accusing the professional lawyer of being complicit in a stitch-up and character assassination? No doubt you have deep pockets.

Anyone who has ever read Akhtar's smear and speculation-filled comments on this website - particularly the almost daily ones against Susan Hall - is familiar with the way he conducts himself in public. They're therefore unlikely to be surprised with how he's even more malicious and vicious when pulling the strings of your organisation behind the scenes. You should both hang your heads in shame.

Harrow Alan, are you saying professional lawyer is not capable of stitch-up? There are many cases in society where lawyers have been biased and stitched up innocent public. You see this in courts week by week.

Harrow Alan, you say “So you're accusing the professional lawyer of being complicit in a stitch-up and character assassination? No doubt you have deep pockets.” “And I would have thought saying Akhtar Husain had been stitched up by the council's lawyer was tantamount to libel.”
It is up to the Council’s lawyer to decide to take me up on liable. Please bear in mind that this professional lawyer did not even find any facts from HCJ or contact any officers of HCJ. How can the hearing or investigation be fair when the accused organisation is not interviewed? I am secretary of HCJ and my contact details are available openly, so why was I not been contacted?
If this is not a stitch up then what is it? You should also find out all the facts before accusing HCJ of any wrong doings as it could amount to libel.
