The mayor of Harrow has continued on a 23-year tradition of planting a tree to commemorate her year in office.

Councillor Nana Asante planted the tree in Harrow Recreational Ground, in an area called The Mayors Avenue, with the help of pupils of Norbury School pupils.

The planting by the borough’s first citizen has taken place every spring for the last 23 years.

The mayor said: “I am extremely delighted to mark my mayoral year with this tradition, which goes back over 20 years.

“I would like to thank everyone who helped with the tree planting, in particular Norbury School who made the day one to remember.

“It is the first cherry tree that has been planted here, and I hope that it will brighten Mayors Avenue with blossom every spring and that visitors to the park will enjoy the cherries when fruit is ready to be picked.”
