A church that was founded in the front room of a house a century ago has begun festivities to mark its 100th year in the community.

St Luke’s Catholic Church, Pinner, held its first mass in the front room of a Hatch End home in 1914.

To mark its centenary, the Love Lane church has announced a calendar of events for the year ahead, which started with a celebratory Mass by Archbishop Vincent Nichols on Saturday evening.

Father Robert Plourde, priest of St Luke’s, said: "Saturday's centenary celebration mass with the Archbishop Vincent Nichols was a wonderful celebration of Mass and a joyous event for the parish.

“I pray the celebrations for the coming year bring the community of Pinner together. It will be a busy 100th year."

Events for the centenary include a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela for 40 members of the congregation in May, a flower festival in June and visits from Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor and Father Christopher Jamieson OSB.

The church hopes to welcome members of the wider Pinner community at its traditional Hog Roast in September to the St Luke’s Concert in October.
