A 20-minute free parking scheme will be rolled out across the borough, it was announced today.

Harrow Borough Council leader Councillor Susan Hall revealed the plans for the scheme ahead of budget discussions this month.

The Conservative administration says it has found the money in its budget to introduce the scheme across the whole borough.

It will include the upgrading of many of Harrow’s on-street ticket machines to include a keypad for motorists to input their car registration number, which the council hopes will prevent the scheme being abused.

Drivers will also only be able to get free 20-minutes' parking once a day.

The scheme was trialled by the previous Independent Labour administration around Rayners Lane in the summer last year.

However it was cancelled by the incoming Conservative group after it was found the scheme would cost the authority too much money and was being abused by motorists.
