Members of the opposition have backed plans from Harrow Borough Council to ban spitting on the street.

Harrow Borough Council launched a petition to get public support to introduce a new by-law to ban spitting.

Today Harrow Labour’s manifesto co-ordinator Sachin Shah gave the party’s support to the plans.

He said: "The Labour Group believes that political parties should work together to work in the best interests of local residents.

“We are happy to support the plans to ban spitting. We'll include this in our manifesto and will ensure that it is properly implemented.”

Any new by-law must be approved by the Department for Communities and Local Government and the council must show there is support from the community for the ban.

The council must also show that spitting is a significant problem in the borough and also indicate what counts as an offence and what cases may be exempt, such as sporting fixtures.
