A pupil who has worked to raise awareness of deaf people in his school has been nominated for an award.

Ammaar Hussein, who is deaf, has been nominated for the John Lewis Young People of the Year awards (YOPEYs) for his dedicated support of Harrow United Deaf Club.

The Hatch End High pupil has been deaf since he was a baby when he was given the wrong medicine for a cold.

Deputy headtecher Marina Dunford, who nominated him, said: "Ammaar is a truly inspirational young man.

"Being deaf is certainly not a barrier to him. He has worked and continues to work to emphasize the importance of the deaf community being accepted into society without prejudice."

The 15-year-old also takes an active role in school life as an anti bullying ambassador, corridor monitor, helping with the schools reading club as well as fundraising for the charity.

He said: "My role is to make sure the school is a safe, friendly and warm-hearted environment.

"I feel it is important to show deaf people from my generation that if I can do it, they can do it too."

The YOPEYs aims to highlight the work of children, teenagers and young adults from the ages of ten to 25 who are role models to others their age.

Winners of the award will get a £1,000 prize, half of which is to be donated to a charity of their choice.
