A public health body is calling for greater awareness of malaria after 60 cases were reported in the borough.

The Public Health England group African Diaspora for Action Against Malaria (ADAAM) is calling for greater awareness of the disease among African communities in North West London.

In 2012 there were 60 cases of malaria in Harrow and for the whole of North West London there were nearly 100.

People are being urged to protect themselves before going away to visit their family in Africa.

Dr Yimmy Chow, director of PHE’s North West London health protection team, said: “Malaria is a preventable disease, so it’s concerning that we continue to see cases in people from North West London who have travelled abroad.

“This Christmas, as people make plans to visit family and friends in parts of the world affected by malaria, it is important for people to be aware of the risks of the disease, which is potentially life-threatening.”

ADAAM co-ordinator Ralph Tanyi said: “Our advice is that people should not take any risks with their health and should speak to their doctor about medication to prevent malaria, no matter how short the trip.”
