Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas meets Frank Olok, coordinator of Malawi Fairtrade network
Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas has supported a new campaign for farmers in the developing world to be paid a sustainable wage.
Mr Thomas met Frank Olok, coordinator of Malawi Fairtrade network, to hear about the challenges facing smallholder farmers during Fairtrade Fortnight, which ends on Sunday.
The Fairtrade Foundation has launched the new campaign calling for urgent action to support the 500 million farmers who produce 70 per cent of the world’s food, but currently make up half the world’s hungry people.
Mr Thomas said: “We rely on smallholder farmers for our everyday food so it is only right that we help them make a sustainable living.”
