GREEN fingered volunteers donned their gardening gloves in support of a charity for people with learning disabilities this Mitzvah Day.

Ten people helped transform the garden at Kisharon’s Hanna Schwalbe residential home in Golders Green, uprooting weeds and replacing them with around 45 different plants including a hibiscus and fuchsia plant.

The team also created a rockery as part of their contribution to Mitzvah Day, a Jewish lead initiative which encourages people to give their time to charity rather than cash.

As well as the gardening activities, 45 people spent more than two hours folding and packing greeting cards which will be sold in aid of Kisharon.

The charity's chief executive, Dr Beverley Jacobson, said: “It was a fantastic day. It was great to have an opportunity to have more than 50 people see firsthand the work we do but also benefit from their help. They made us a completely new garden and increased our stock of cards by about 2,000 which is hugely beneficial.”

A group of children supported by Kisharon also enjoyed a game of football with youngsters in the Maccabi Junior League at The Hive Football Centre in Edgware.
