A COUPLE who fraudulently claimed in excess of £7,000 in benefits to decorate their house have been fined more than £1,000.

Mehoob Shaikh, 56, and his wife Sofia, 46, must each pay Harrow Council £572.50 and were both given three-year conditional discharges for seven counts of benefit fraud.

The pair, who have four children, hid more than £30,000 in savings from the council while claiming money to decorate their home in Northolt Road, South Harrow.

They were caught when their secret bank account was uncovered.

They admitted fraudulently obtaining £7,626.16, dating back to 1995, and have since paid the money back.

The couple appeared at Harrow Magistrates Court today.
