ST GEORGE will ride his trusty steed through Pinner as part of the patron saint's celebrations on Sunday.

A whole host of events will take place as local residents celebrate ahead of St George's Day on April 23.

Famous dragon slayer St George is venerated as an example of bravery in defence of the poor and defenceless and of the Christian faith.

Church warden Gordon Williams and Jill Tindall, landlady of The Queens Head pub, High Street, Pinner, have taken it upon themselves to ensure that the tradition of celebrating St George's Day continues.

This year the famous wheelbarrow race will be amalgamated into the festivities which start at 10am with a farmer's market in The Queens Head car park that will go all day.

The race starts at 2.30pm at The Little Common, Elm Park Road, and will stop at The Oddfellows Arms, The George, The Victory, Prezzo and The Queens Head in an alcohol-fuelled race to glory.

Gordon said: "You need to be fit to take part, it is great fun and a great race. You have to down a half pint at every stop along the way and I'm glad the council have been able to give us insurance for the race."

There will be bell ringers, Herga Mummers, Morris Dancers and the amazing voice of Gemma Turner, plus special appearances by St George himself on horseback.

Parking is free at all council-run car parks all day.
