Democratic reform lobbyists target Harrow MP Tony McNulty

DEMOCRATIC reform lobbyists are trying to unseat a Harrow MP who they have labelled a benefits cheat.

Power 2010 has been putting up posters across the borough and handing out leaflets accusing Tony McNulty, Labour MP for Harrow East, of “crimes against democracy” and urging residents not to vote for him.

The organisation, which is campaigning for democratic reform, had volunteers out in Harrow town centre yesterday to launch its action against Mr McNulty.

Power 2010 has attacked the sitting MP for championing the contentious ID card scheme, and claim he “isn't interested in integrity” after being engulfed in the expenses scandal.

They are planning a mass leaflet drop across the Harrow East constituency and will be putting up 'wanted' posters with Mr McNulty's images on them.

The Harrow MP is the first of a host of candidates being targeted by Power 2010, which has declared its intention to try to unseat people it believes oppose democratic reform.

The worst aspet is the wholesale signing up to tirning the UK into a tracked, cattle-tagged POLICE STATE. We are all "terrorists" and "paedophiles" unless the State says otherwise and gives us our "Citizen-Licence".

I have been warning and writing against the Identity-Slave-Card since its inception and berated ANY party that advocated it.

Personally, seeing that "New" Fascist Labour have trashed our constitution by violating every tenet of Magna Carta 1215 and the English Bill of Rights 1689, while trying to hand ove sovereignty via the disgusting "Lisbon I-can't-believe-it's
-not-a-Constitution"
, I'd have the whole lot of them tried for TREASON.

They need to be removed and sorry to say, only a strong and decisive CONSERVATIVE vote will get them OUT.

Re: Cllr Jeremy Zeid...

Great to see that at least one of my only three local 'representatives' holds simplistic opinions and excels at spouting reactionary hyperbole demonstrating little or no political theoretical understanding.

If you want to hear more pointless unconstructive exaggerations, go back to the Daily Mail comments sections and read about "NULIEBORE AND THERE STASI FASCIST STATE!!!" rather than, god forbid, engage in any real debate on any real issues on real alternatives.

No big surprise, as I suspect that if engaged in rationally talking about policy (with actual facts, not doctored ones), the PPC for Harrow East that Cllr Zeid is campaigning for would crumble. On my doorstep, his colleague Cllr Mithani failed to give any reason as to why I should vote for Bob Blackman, other than shoving a glossy contentless leaflet full of photo-ops in my hand (paid for by whom?) and walk away.

Finally, the Conservative Party voted wholesale against changing the voting system to something fairer, potentially more proportional, and ultimately more democratic. They're just as bad as Mr McNulty, they just don't want anyone to know about it. More hypocritically, they are happy to opportunistically jump on any bandwagon they please, without even bothering to read the motives for Power2010 campaign mentioned in the article above, to which they are generally opposed.

Poor political understanding, reactionary hyperbole, and refusal to engage in constructive debate - now there's 'change' to vote for!

Very good Lianne. And your point is??

I don't see any cogent argumants here apart from pointless gamesaying. What are your views on the wholesale nationalization of our identities? What is you view on being forced to constantly prove who you are?

And please don't comeup with that tired olf "If you've nothing to hide" codswallop.

My family has a history of persecution, harrassment, imprisonment and extermination, by both the Nazis and the Communists, and do not think for one minute that this country is entirely innocent. So you will perhaps excuse my extreme distrust of any government that would track my every move, transaction or communication.

Thwe reality I have nothing to hide, but EVERYTHING to fear from a bully-state that doesn't believe that I have nothing to hide, and THAT is the reality.

So what is your opinion, apart from the usual and frankly boring one about how "proportional representation" is somehow "fairer", I just love that weasel word "fairer".

Finally, I am quite entitled to describe "New" Labour as a FASCIST party as it is just so keen on creating scapegoats, unconstitutional laws, penalties fines and so many "offences" that I would not be the least bit surprised if it was now illegal to take a leak without some form of licence or fee.

When the citizens of the UK are so disempowered that they can be prosecuted for defending themselves while the criminals have all sorts of rights, why the surprise at the reaction.

That is not "reactionary" (another tired marxist jibe) it is a natural reaction to a profound sense of injustice.

Sorry Lianne, but your political bias shines out like a beacon, especially that other hackneyed dig at a popular newspaper and fascistic condemnation of its readers, of which am not one.

So again, what is your stance on the cattle-tagging of the nation and of peole who have committed no crime, nor been convicted, being data-raped of their DNA???

If Cllr Zeid has "nothing to hide", then may I point him into the direction of the spying bin article?

Whilst he may have gone against "the ranks", Harrow Council who are Conservative led have placed chips in our bins which do the kind of monitoring he finds so abhorrent. Which, in time, may lead all us Harrovians to be in the fascist state he describes.

Food for thought....

Many thanks for the compliment. However, I should point out that it’s difficult to read any clear 'argumants' or desire to have a debate in your first comment. My apologies, my mistake. May I take your points in order:

1) My main issue was about the actual content of the article on which you took the time to comment on. The Power2010 campaign is pushing a number of issues, as chosen by the public:

- “Introduce a proportional voting system”
- “Scrap ID cards and roll back the database state”
- “Replace the House of Lords with an elected chamber”
- “Allow only English MPs to vote on English laws”
- “Draw up a written constitution”

You only address one of these, (though indirectly a second) and don’t make your, the PPC you support, or your party’s position clear on these issues, thus missing the opportunity to put forward an argument for your proposed course of action which is actually relevant to the above.

2) Since you ask, I happen to agree with at least four of them, but I don’t feel I know enough about the fifth to hold an informed opinion on it just yet.

One of these that I agree particularly strongly with is the second. I have grave concerns about the growth of surveillance, the security, management and uses of centralised data, DNA recording, exemplified disregard of habeas corpus, and general police antagonism particularly towards the acts of protest and free speech.

I suspect we agree on many of these, but these are not mentioned in your opening comment, instead you choose to use hyperbole such as “every tenet of the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights”. If I recall correctly from a trip to the British Library, the vast majority of relevant tenets from the Magna Carta, and every one (bar maybe Protestants’ right to bear arms) from the English Bill of Rights are still intact.

3) I haven’t put the “if you’ve got nothing to hide…” argument forward (and never would since I disagree with its premise), so your pre-emption suggests that maybe you have some preconceptions of your own you need to address. Anyway, given the diverse ethnic make-up of Harrow, I’m sure many residents can lay claim to a history of ancestral persecution going back as far as time itself, myself included. I sense you're trying to start a game of trump cards, but that’s not something I’m interested in engaging in, because it’s a distraction. I’d rather look at the above five issues and openly discuss them, and if we agree that they are problems, coming up with good alternatives. I feel that this is the most sensible and mature approach.

4) Research by psephologists (people who have academic qualifications in the study of elections, and whose conclusions are arguably more weighty than others) has shown that our current voting system is the one that lends itself to the most unrepresentative parliaments – both by political and social standards, that has the highest wastage of electors’ votes, that means a few thousand voters in a few seats drastically alter the outcome and thus are the only ones that manifestos need cater to, that perpetuates ‘safe seats’ whereby anyone wearing the right colour can be elected by proxy, and that leads to ‘strong’ though unaccountable governments. “Fair” is sometimes a subjective term, but I think it’s fair to say that this is an unfair state of things, at least for the majority of us.

5) ‘I would not be the least bit surprised if it was now illegal to take a leak without some form of licence or fee’. You’ll be glad to know that this is not the case. The OED defines fascism as “an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government” and given the examples you used previously (I fastidiously avoid invoking Godwin’s Law myself), I think that though we should be aware and educated about history, it’s just as counter-productive, dangerous and disparaging to use them in over-exaggerations.

6) I used the term ‘reactionary’ in its general sense – you were knee-jerk reacting to the above article, apparently without really knowing it’s terms of reference (see point 1)

7) I apologise likening the style of your comment to that of those contributed to another newspaper (one that seems to be the single most sued newspaper for misrepresentations and falsifications of recent years, so perhaps deserves its reputation for hyperbole?), I over-stepped the line in using words far too strong for purpose, and did myself, my opinions and my public image a great disservice.

8) I do not deny that I have political opinions, and though this should be irrelevant, you seem to imply my criticisms don't extend across the political spectrum when in fact they do - but it surely is no more a bias than your own.

One might even suggest that your membership of a competitive political party lends you to the greatest bias of all - not unlike trying the bias of one child trying to trip over another one at a school play audition.

At least I’m basing my suggestions on your stated position, rather than mere speculation. Could you imagine if I were to dismiss you on the basis of being ‘frankly boring’ or ‘marxist’.

Finally, one thing that I am genuinely taken aback by is your apparent dismissive contempt for one of your constituents, particularly as this is my first experience of interacting with you. I would’ve presumed you would consider it worthwhile engaging with one of the people you pertain to represent in a respectful manner (if only for electoral advantage) however it has emerged that I was naïve to think so.

I look forward to meeting you in person when you next come round in the approaching months.
