A STANMORE mosque brought the borough's diverse communities together yesterday.

The Husaini Shia Islamic Centre, in Wood Lane, held an interfaith celebration in honour of Imam Husayn, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at 2.30pm.

Mosque leaders say Imam Husayn paved the way for future leaders and champions of human rights.

Guests were treated to food and the theme of the day was freedom.

Councillor Husain Akhtar (Cons/Canons) was at the event and said: “Imam Husayn was a sort of freedom fighter, 1,400 years ago.

“This is the third year they've celebrated so there were people from all major faiths. The theme was about freedom and about how it has been preserved over centuries.

“With freedom comes the responsibility to maintain it and ensure other people enjoy it as well.”
