Pensioner airlifted to hospital after Stanmore crash

A PENSIONER is in a serious condition in hospital after an accident in Stanmore this afternoon.

The man, thought to be in his 70s, was airlifted to hospital after the incident at around 1.15pm in Stanmore Broadway.

Nearby traders believe the man, who was on a mobility scooter, was hit by a car as he tried to cross the busy main road outside Pizza Express.

A number of shop owners said they did not hear any noise at the time of the crash, and were not aware of the incident until police began arriving at the scene and closed off a section of the Broadway.

The pensioner's scooter remains on the pavement close to where the accident happened as investigators try to determine the cause of the crash. They have put up a blue forensic tent around the scene to protect potential evidence.

An air ambulance arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and tried to land in main road, but was forced to land in an adjacent road as its rotor blades threatened to damage the shop fronts.

The pensioner is believed to be in a serious condition in hospital.

Robert Simon, who works in a nearby bakery, saw the aftermath of the accident as police and paramedics arrived on the scene.

He said the road has become increasingly dangerous for pedestrian who may be confused about how to cross to the other side.

He said: “This is a totally dangerous road. The traffic lights give no indication to the pedestrians at all.

“It is dangerous for a lot of old people who may not see things until it's too late.”

The road is expected to be closed for at least a couple more hours, and motorists are being advised to expect delays.

Bus routes normally operating through Stanmore town centre have been diverted until the police cordoned has been lifted.
