A TEACHER at a Kenton school has been rated best in the country for her performance in her first year in the job.
Juliet McGirr, 24, of Claremont High School, won the SSAT Award for Outstanding New Teacher of the Year at a star-studded ceremony in central London on Tuesday.
Sally Gunnell, former British Olypmic 400m champion, and BBC London newsreader Riz Lateef were both at the event.
Ms McGirr said: “I was quite overwhelmed really. All the way through from when I first heard I was nominated.
“It was really nice that people had recognised the things I had done in my first year. It's very difficult, you don't know whether you are doing things the right way.
“So when someone takes the time to nominate you it's just really flattering.”
She was nominated by her deputy head and mentor who went with her to the ceremony alongside her parents.
She said: “My parents didn't really know what it was about at first but when we got there and they realised it was such a prestigious ceremony I think they were quite proud.”
