Tesco buys Woolworths store in Wealdstone

SUPERMARKET giants Tesco have bought the now closed down Woolworths branch in Wealdstone.

The company is looking to set up a Tesco Express store at the site, in High Street, and will soon put in a planning application to change the shop sign, install a cash machine and put in plants at the back of the building.

Milan Shah, vice chairman of Wealdstone Traders' Association, said: “It's very good news. Woolworths is an eye sore because it's right in the heart of Wealdstone, where the traffic lights are.

“Any shop which is full, which will bring more people into the area is good.”

Many traders feared the collapse of Woolworths would hurt the area, saying it brought in people who then used other shops as well.

James Wiggam, a spokesman for Tesco, said: “We recognise that this is a good opportunity to make use of the store and provide a new shopping opportunity in Wealdstone.”

Nobody seems to give a flying fig about the Budgens which is directly opposite the old Woolies site and has served the community well as a grocery shop since the days of Kwik Save and beyond! And what about Iceland filling the frozen food gap that Budgens don't supply?

Will this really bring new people to the area or will it just divide the existing clientele?

In the vain hope that Tesco were to read this or someone to pass on the message (not a hope in hell but worth a go) Tesco should open up the shop as an outlet store. They can do the newsagent bit of fags, newspapers, sweets and possibly essentials like milk and bread if the absolutely have to. But what about opening it up as simply an outlet store for the non-grocery items they sell? Clothes, DVDs, CDs, garden items the lot! With people already knowing the brand from visiting the Watford store and the fact that Tesco are rethinking their expansion of Harrow, this is a gap in the market.

It'll be like Woolies never left

This is interesting as the Budgens store in Wealdstone used to be a Tesco store back in the 70's, as I worked there part time & temporarily full time before moving on. Not sure what year Tesco sold it.
