A young singer gave her biggest performance to date as part of a national TV show watched by millions of people.

Sanjna Vekaria, from Harrow, took centre stage on BBC One’s ‘Michael McIntyre’s Big Show’, which airs on December 2.

Appearing in the ‘Unexpected Star’ segment of the show, the 18-year-old transforms from an aspiring taekwondo champion into an established musician.

Her mother, Chhaya, nominated her for the part after witnessing her talent develop over the years.

She said: “Sanjna has always had a passion for singing ever since she was two years old.

“I put her name forward but didn’t think anything of it until I was told that she would be performing. We’re all so proud of her.”

Chhaya explained how her daughter always took part in variety shows at Priestmead Primary and Claremont High School and that she frequently sings at Westfield Shopping Centre.

She added how Sanjna “showed her confidence” by performing a religious verse in Guajarati during a season of The Proms.

“This made me realise that she could do it but I was still a little bit unsettled as this is a very popular TV show,” she said. “But she absolutely nailed it. She sang beautifully.”
