Pupils in Harrow could lose out as government cuts could see schools hit by a £15m loss by 2019.

Harrow schools could lose around £504 per pupil as the Government changes how schools are funded.

Calls are now being made for the government to rethink the cuts, as around 70 per cent of a school’s budget is spent on staffing, funding reductions are likely to impact the number of teachers and support staff, increasing class sizes and impacting performance.

In January this year, Harrow secondary schools on the whole were found to be performing above the national average

Harrow west Councillor Christine Robson, Portfolio Holder for Children, Schools and Young People said: "We are calling on the government to rethink the changes to the funding formula before the education of young people is negatively affected.

"Harrow’s excellent schools will continue to do their best to maintain a high standard of education, but these efforts will be compromised by these funding cuts."

Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas, said he would continue to fight for funding in the borough’s schools.

He said: "Schools in England are already forecast to lose 8% of funding per pupil under this Government, and they are now pushing ahead with plans to change the funding formula which will make schools in Harrow even worse off.

"It is vital that we invest in school facilities and give head teachers the resources they need to recruit and retain teachers.

"I will continue to challenge Ministers in Parliament and fight for the funding schools in Harrow need."

Harrow’s Labour Group Councillors have proposed a motion for next week’s Council meeting in which they call for better funding.
