Do you remember Youngs fishing shop in Harrow?

A journalist and fishing fan is asking readers for help into fishing out more information on one of Harrow’s oldest fishing shops.

Gary Cullum, Chairman of the Otterspool Angling Club in Watford, is appealing to readers to help him as he researches into the shop’s history in the 1950s.

The former fishing tackle shop was in Station Road, Harrow and was owned and run by Jack Young and his son, Clive Young.

The shop made fishing rods and sold tackle.

A small workshop and a milling machine was brought in years later from former Youngs apprentice, Bob Southwell.
Mr Cullum , originally from Harrow, said the Youngs shop was his local fishing rod builder.

He is researching the shop and the family with hopes to write a book.
Mr Cullum said: “I know that the owner, Clive Young, closed the shop some years ago and retired to the Welsh borders.

“I know that Ted Oliver and Clive Young worked there as teenagers. Ted moved to Knebworth and Clive inherited the firm from his father.

"Clive died 18 months, so is no longer around to assist with compiling information on the history of old split cane rod makers and tackle dealers of yesteryear.

“If anyone knows anything about Youngs of Harrow or their family, or who have any example of tackle made by these London tackle manufacturers, I should be delighted to hear from them.”
