A Harrow MP has called for a full public consultation on TfL’s proposed redevelopment plan for Harrow-on-the-Hill station.

Transport for London aims to improve access at Harrow’s busiest underground station, addressing the problem posed to wheelchair and pushchair users by the large amount of steps and the lack of a lift.

To help fund the project, TfL has proposed a major redevelopment of the adjacent car park and bus station, as well as the construction of six tower blocks that could reach 25 storeys high.

Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas started a petition calling on TfL to hold a public consultation on the plans, gaining around 150 signatories in just a couple of days.

Mr Thomas has been campaigning for years to improve accessibility at the station but raised concerns about the current proposal.

“This ‘Trump Towers’ style redevelopment appears to contain a low number of affordable homes, does not prioritise the needs of local residents to tackle Harrow’s housing crisis, and with blocks up to 25 storeys high, would be completely out of step with the local area and environment,” he said.

“They have a budget for making stations accessible which they should dip into to help fund the basic accessibility work.

“Outer London commuters have been treated like a cash cow by TfL with huge fare rises in recent years, and it’s now time they took the needs of Harrow and local residents seriously.”

Graeme Craig, commercial development director for TfL said: “Harrow-on-the-Hill tube station is one of many sites we are considering for development, as part of our wider plans to address London’s critical need for affordable housing and generate income to reinvest in the transport network.

"Development at Harrow-on-the-Hill would be focused on delivering local station improvements, including step-free access.

“No decisions have been made on a development at Harrow-on-the-Hill, and we’ve begun conversations with the new mayor’s team about increasing the number of affordable homes that could be delivered on the site.

“We are also speaking with the local authority, Gareth Thomas MP, and other local representatives. Once a plan is formed, we will fully consult with those who live and work in the area for feedback on the scheme.”
