If you grew up in Harrow in the 1980s and the early 1990s, chances are you remember the water slide at the Harrow Leisure Centre.

The yellow flume was a popular part of the venue, with queues of swimmers whooshing down into the water every day.

But after the centre reopened in 1997 following a three year refurbishment, swimmers were disappointed to find it had been removed.

Rumours slid around about what could have happened: some said razor blades, others said a boy broke his neck on his way down while others claimed faeces were found in the water.

It turns out it was none of these… in reality, it just cost too much to run.

Harrow Council said in a statement: “The building closed in 1994 for a major refurbishment before reopening in 1997.

“The centre was upgraded to provide new and modern facilities which included refurbishment of the swimming pool, three sports halls and the installation of new mechanical and electrical systems.

“During the refurbishment, the slides and outdoor pool were closed due to high running costs.”

So now you know.
