Harrow joined in national celebrations for the Queen's birthday last night lighting two beacons in the borough.

Crowds gathered in car parks at the Civic Centre and Old Redding to watch the Mayor of Harrow Cllr Krishna Suresh light the ceremonial beacon.

The Grim's Dyke brass band played the national anthem and led those gathered in a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday around the fire.

Members of the Rotary Club assisted as stewards, while police cadets formed an honourary guard up to the beacon for Harrow dignitaries to walk through.

Cllr Suresh read out a message from Prince Charles thanking people for uniting in heartfelt appreciation for the Queen and her service.

Cllr David Perry, leader of Harrow Council, said the crowd was testament to the Queen's work to bring people together.

He said: "The Queen regularly visits Harrow, she's been here many many times and many of her family.

"It's welcome to see young people, older people, people of different communities coming here tonight in support of the Royal family."
