England’s first virtual marathon is to be held at Harrow Leisure Centre.

The centre will host Run Social Digital Virgin London Marathon event from 10am on Sunday, April 24, with participants raising money for the Anthony Nolan Trust.

The charity matches people willing to donate their blood stem cells or bone marrow to people who desperately need lifesaving transplants.

The virtual marathon will take place on three decorated assigned treadmills in the gym and runners will start in unison with the London Marathon.

Three teams of participants will run the 26-mile marathon route with one, two or three miles each in a relay format.

The free Run Social app with Ipads on the treadmills will allow runners to go through the route in real time against the London Marathon.

There will also be a master of ceremonies, water stations and the atmosphere of a sporting event, with participants being cheered on by spectators.

Everyone Active general manager John Sewell, who run the centre in partnership with Harrow Council, said: "We are very excited to be hosting this new event at Harrow Leisure Centre for our members.

"We hope many decide to get involved and raise money for the Anthony Nolan Trust."

Everyone Active is asking that participants and spectators make a minimum donation of £5 to the Anthony Nolan Trust, which can be paid at reception when you book your place.
