Services for the elderly and public health initiatives are facing substantial cuts as Harrow Council plans to save £37.2 million by 2019/20.

The council's budget proposals for 2016/17 to 2019/20 are due to be discussed and considered for approval at a meeting on Thursday, February 25.

In the draft, adults services are due to take the biggest hit as the council tries to claw back nearly £13.3 million in the next three financial years.

The budget for day centres and services including Bridge and Wiseworks as well as several neighbourhood resource centres, such as Milmans, Kenmore and New Bentley could be axed completely.

Similarly care home 7 Kenton Road is in danger of losing all its funding in 2017/18, while Bedford House and Roxborough Park's budget could be slashed in half.

The hospital/STARRS discharge service, which helps with early discharge from hospital, is also under threat.

In public health, the authority has proposed to cut the budget entirely for a programme to help residents become physically active, a schools initiative to address young peoples public health and its health visiting scheme.

Drug and alcohol services could be slashed by more than half - losing £1.5 million of the £2.5 million budget which had been allocated this year by 2018/19.

Staffing reductions in drug and alcohol services would cut this year's budget of £4.6 million by £836,000 over the same period.

Drastic savings are also being sought in the council's health check service and its stop smoking activities.

In total the public health budget could be cut by almost £6.5 million in four years.

Savings of £7.6 million are also being sought from children and families services, with the council looking to rely more heavily of grants to fund several education initiatives.

The authority further proposes conducting a review into its special needs service with a savings target of £1.2 million suggested, half its budget this financial year.

More than £5 million could be cut from community services, £4.6 million from council resources and £140,000 from the regeneration budget.

Overall, Harrow Council is proposing cuts amounting to £1.6 million from ongoing savings this year, £10.2 million over the next financial year, £7.4 million in 2017/18, £17.7 million in 2018/19 and £312,000 in 2019/20.
