A cancer charity is calling on people in Harrow to help it save lives.

Delete Blood Cancer UK, the charity that recruits potential blood stem cell donors, is looking for a community leader in Harrow.

Thousands of people from the borough have registered as potential blood stem cell donors with the charity, but it wants to increase that dramatically by the end of 2016.

For many blood cancer and blood disorder patients, a blood stem cell donation is their only chance of survival.

A matching donor not being found doesn’t mean that there is nobody with a tissue type that is compatible to the patient who could save their life.

There could be someone out there with a tissue type that matches the patient’s who could save their life, but tragically, they may not be registered as a potential blood stem donor.

Diane Smith, volunteer officer at the charity, said: "While it is wonderful that there is already thousands of people from Harrow who are registered with us as potential blood stem cell donors, many more could register to save a life.

"That’s why we are looking for someone from Harrow to help us raise awareness and find lifesavers."

Anyone interested in becoming a community leader for the charity should contact Diane at diane.smith@deletebloodcancer.org.uk.

People can register for the charity's blood stem cell donor database in five minutes online and request a cheek swab kit for a tissue test through the Delete Blood Cancer UK website: www.deletebloodcancer.org.uk.
