A MOTHER who took part in a BBC health show claims the programme “saved” her partners life.

Priti Vyas, her daughter, Serena and partner Sandeep Minstry, of Condell Avenue, Kingsbury, took part in Doctor in the House which will be aired on Thursday.

Dr Rangan Chatterjee moved into the couple’s home for eight weeks who monitored their health and lifestyle habits, as well as carrying out tests.

Mr Minstry, 50, was g iven a full body scan that revealed he had accumulated dangerous levels of fat around his organs that could result in a heart attacked.

His 48-year-old partner, a holistic therapist, described the shocking revalation.

She said: “I just burst out crying when I thought what was going to happen to him. I was just so upset.

“It was a shock to the system but it saved his life. Honestly, ignoring the fact was a diabetic, he had issues, but it completely changed our lives. It’s amazing for him and for all of us.

“It like someone telling you you’re going to die but we’re giving you the chance to live. So we all came together as a family and we supported each other.”

The family first auditioned for a BBC cookery show last November but were unsuccessful.

But they were later contacted by producers who asked if they would be interested in taking part in a different series.

As part of the process the family were told to only eat within a ten hour period during the day and were banned from drinking caffeine and alcohol.

They were also prescribed supplements and given advice about what to eat which included giving up sugar, carbohydrates and dairy. Ms Vyas added: said: “The first week my head my killing every single day. The doctor said coming off cocaine is easier than coming off sugar.

“I must have had so much sugar I didn't even realise I was having in my diet. It was really hard, my partner was in such a bad mood.

“Obviously the camera crew are following us around it was really difficult.”

The family were asked to take part in fitness activities to improve their health whilst on the programme, such as cycling and yoga. As a result, she advises anyone looking to improve their health to “listen” to their bodies.

Over the course of filming, Ms Vyas lost a stone in weight and Mr Minstry lost two and half.

She added: “I’m just a completely different person, we all are.

“You body communicates with you when you're not feeling great, or you're tired, you're putting on weight and you need to listen because it’s telling you that something's not right.

“Mindful meditation teaches you to live in the moment not to look in the past or to the future and so I changed my whole mindset I feel healthier, more positive and more in tune with my body than I have ever been.”

The show will be aired at 9pm on BBC one Thursday November 19.
