Police have been warned not to rest on their laurels after Harrow recorded its lowest ever crime rate.

The London Borough of Harrow recorded the lowest ever crime rate for July this year with only 3.93 offences per 1,000 of the population, a figure that confirms Harrow’s position the safest London borough.

Today reporter Lucy Michaeloudis from the Harrow Times spoke to passers-by in Edgware, who live or work in the borough of Harrow, to find out their opinions on the low crime rate.

Harrow Times:

Hairdresser Zheer Ahmed, 29, said: “It’s been better than before, I think it’s calmed down… Nobody wants trouble.

“I’ve been here for 12 years, there still has to be a lot of change, but it’s not like before.”

Harrow Times:

Jenny Storer, 66, retired, said: “You do have to watch that low figure as other people are looking at them.

“It’s good to hear but don’t rest on your laurels as you don’t know what’ll happen.”

Harrow Times:

Musician Royston Williams, 47, said he wasn’t surprised by the low crime rate.

He said: “That’s good. I’ve lived in worse places, where it’s more deprived so there’s more crime.

“I think in Harrow it’s to do with a change of community, people move quickly in and out and there’s no interference.”

Harrow Times:

Meanwhile receptionist Hayley Barker, 33, was shocked by the rates.

She said: “I am surprised a bit, I didn’t think it was that low. It’s a bit rough - I wouldn’t feel so safe at night but in the day I feel quite safe.”

When asked what has contributed to the low crime rate, she said: “It may be the police… although I don’t see many about.”

In July, the borough recorded a total of 939 crimes – less than half of the 2,182 crimes seen in Barnet in the same month and 2,052 in the neighbouring borough of Brent.

Harrow is one of only four boroughs in the capital with below average crime, joining Richmond, Bexley and Sutton.
