A fish and chip shop and restaurant raised £300 for charity after the death of a loyal customer.

Barracuda, in Headstone Drive, Wealdstone, has raised £355 for St Luke’s Hospice by raffling fish and chips for two, with wine, at a monthly quiz night.

The chip shop and restaurant decided to host the fundraising night in memory of regular customer Helen Steele, who died earlier this year.

Owner Yiannis Christofis said: “I’d like to say a big thank you to all those who donated money in memory of Helen.

“We just want to show off the amount of support given for Helen and the hospice by us and our customers.

“Her family had said they didn’t want flowers, they wanted donations to the hospice, so that’s why we organised this.”

After announcing Miss Steele’s death at one of the regular events, a customer suggested hosting an evening in her memory while other customers left donations in tribute to the quiz competitor.

Mr Christofis added: “Lots of people came in saying they’d like to donate money because of Helen, even people that didn’t know her.

“Even now, people are coming in asking to donate.

“It is very strange her not being here anymore – she used to come at least once a week so I would call her my majority shareholder.

“She was a monthly quizzer and team player, and loved being a part of it.”

Anyone wishing to donate to the hospice in memory of Helen is asked to visit St Luke’s in Kenton Grange, off Kenton Road.

Tim Todhunter, CEO of St Luke's said: “We are incredibly grateful to all the staff and customers of Barracuda, who raised £355 for St Luke’s Hospice in memory of regular customer Helen Steele.

"Helen was well-loved by many across our community, and over £800 has been donated in celebration of her life.

"The money will be put to work helping local people to have top quality care at the end of their lives.”
