Neighbours and motorists say a school expansion will bring 'chaos’ to their street.

Harrow Borough Council last week approved plans to expand Grimsdyke Primary School, in Sylvia Avenue, Pinner.

The proposal had been sent back to the cabinet for further debate because of concerns about traffic.

However, the scheme was deemed acceptable and the school is now set to expand from 420 to 630 pupils.

Homeowners in the road say the increase in pupils, and in turn parents and cars, will ruin the quiet area.

Mr Tilbry, who lives directly next door to the school, said: “It is absolute bedlam. There are too many people already and the road is basically just a car park now.

“They have ‘uglified’ this street. It used to be a lovely tree lined avenue, that was a pleasant and quiet area to live in, but now I can’t stand it any longer and I want to move out.

“There is no privacy anymore. It’s so noisy all the time, we’re all overlooked, and it just feels like I’m living in a supermarket checkout.

“People are always going to park here – I’m used to it and I don’t mind it to an extent. But it is now the age of the car and this expansion will add another 100 to 200 cars to the mix which is just utterly unacceptable. This road cannot cope and we will be the ones left to deal with the chaos.”

Yellow road markings cover the area around the school entrance, with parking restrictions from 8.30am to 9.30am and from 3pm to 4.30pm.

But neighbours say parents picking up their children often flout the rules, or park on or blocking private driveways.

A 31-year-old delivery driver, who did not want to be named, said: “It is a nightmare trying to deliver anything in the mornings or the afternoons when the school is kicking out as it is, so I try to avoid any of these roads if I can help it.

“With more schoolchildren there will be more parents, with their unnecessarily large cars. It will just be unbearable, so I feel for people actually living here.”
