The president of a deaf club was shocked to receive an invitation to Downing Street in recognition of his community work.

Asif Iqbal, president of Harrow United Deaf Club, was invited to an reception hosted by David Cameron, to mark the contribution 'community champions' have made in their communities.

The reception, which took place on Monday, was held to allow the Prime Minister to thank high profile community members for their role in promoting engagement, improving the quality of life in their area and presenting positive role models for young people.

Mr Iqbal was invited to the event in recognition of his work as a president of Harrow United Deaf Club and ambassador of Harrow Art Centre.

He said: “I was so shocked when I received a letter of invitation from No. 10, and I'm honoured to be recognised for my community work which I am passionate about.

“I hope to encourage and inspire local communities to give something back to the community. It could be something as simple as volunteering or as challenging as organising a variety of monthly events to educate and inspire others on various issues.

“It is so rewarding when you see your action made lots of difference in other people's life, creating happier communities."

The Prime Minister welcomed Mr Iqbal and a number of other ‘community champions’ to 10 Downing Street, and invited guests to speak about their community work and achievements in their area, before thanking them for their dedication and commitment.

Concervative candidate Hannah David, who nominated Mr Iqbal for the visit, said: “It was my very great pleasure to introduce Harrow United Deaf Club's very own Asif Iqbal to the Prime Minister as my nominee for this year's Community Champions Reception.

"The event was an ideal opportunity for him to bring the Prime Minister up to date on all of the excellent work that he and the team at HUDC have been doing.  I was thrilled to be able to play a part in bringing this meet about”.
