Supermarket staff volunteered their time to help give a Scout hut a new lease of life.

Tesco workers from across Harrow have been working all week on 19th Harrow Scout Group’s home in High Street, Wealdstone.

The team have been carrying out vital maintenance work on the building as well as giving it a lick of paint, replacing lights, clearing guttering and landscaping.

Today the Mayor of Harrow officially reopened the hut and handed the keys back to the scouts.

The week of volunteering was part of the supermarket’s Community Champion scheme which aims to give support to charities and groups in the area.

Debbie Briody, community champion for Tesco in Harrow, said: “The response we have had from staff in the different stores has been fantastic.

“They have all really enjoyed it and got a lot out of the experience.

“I think it is important for all the stores to give something back so they are part of the community.”

19th Harrow Scouts leader Malcolm Nicholas said: “We were delighted to have had the team from Tesco come down and help.

“They have done a great job and really made the place look smart, which we hope will attract a few more members.”

Speaking after the reopening, Harrow Mayor Councillor Ajay Maru said: “I think what the Tesco staff have done here is fantastic and it means children from the community will be able to continue to enjoy this hut.”
