A free bike club for women will be moving inside for the winter - and is still looking for new members.

Harrow Women’s Bike Club launched in January this year and has helped more than 100 women from all parts of the community get on two wheels.

The club, run by training group Cycle Experience, will meet every Wednesday at its winter venue of Byron Hall at Harrow Leisure Centre, in Christchurch Avenue from November 12.

Co-ordinator and instructor for the club Hannah McQuarrie said: “The club was initially set up to offer cycle training to women, with the hope of encouraging more women to make short journeys by bike, rather than car.

“It was clear that women needed a safe space to learn the very basics before taking to the borough’s parks.

“Cycling is a fantastic sport for anyone hoping to build up their fitness or anyone who doesn’t have a lot of spare time to keep fit."

She added: “Cycle Experience also recognise other barriers to cycling, such as access to a bike on which to learn. Buying a bike can be a daunting experience for anyone, let alone if you don’t have any experience of cycling.

“We have therefore purchased a large number of bicycles, with funding from Harrow Council, which are kept at the club’s headquarters for members to borrow during sessions.

“We hope that providing bikes will make cycling more accessible to women in the borough. It also makes attending the club easier as you don’t need to transport your bike to our sessions.”

The club, which attracts up to 20 cyclists a week, is funded by Harrow Borough Council and is free to join, with members getting access to bikes and training for absolute beginners.
