Hundreds of school children from across Harrow took part in an annual tag rugby festival with the help of Premiership rugby club Saracens.

The 15 schools fielded 25 teams of Year 5 and 6 pupils for the festival today at Harrow RFC in Wood Lane, Stanmore.

The tournament, which has been held at the club for the past five years, is run by the Saracens Sport Foundation.

Simone Shepherd, sport development manager for the foundation, said: “It’s a great day and every year in Harrow we see more and more teams coming along and more kids wanting to give it a try.

“Tag rugby is really growing in schools because it’s an inclusive no-contact sport for boys and girls and also teaches the basics of the sport.

“We do work in schools and train staff so they can teach tag rugby in PE lessons.”

Linda Dunleavy, chairman of the Harrow RFCs Minis teams, said: “We’ve had Saracens coming down here for a few years now and it’s great to see so many kids getting involves in the sport.”

Other tag rugby festivals for schools are held in the London boroughs of Barnet and Enfield and in also in Hertfordshire.

The winners of the different tournaments will be in for a chance of playing a tag rugby final at Saracens home Allianz Park.
