A petition from parents calling for a zebra crossing near a school has been handed into Harrow Borough Council.

The campaign launched by parents and governors of Belmont School, in Hibbet Road, started earlier this month after a girl was hit by a car on her way to school.

The petition received more than 200 signatures and was handed in to Harrow council this week.

The council says it will review putting in a zebra crossing in the road and will continue to promote road safety in the borough’s schools.

Since the start of the campaign, children at the school have given lessons in road safety to their parents as part of a week of action.

Belmont's junior travel ambassadors talked to parents about walking to school and parking safely and legally if they do have to drive.

During days of action in the last week the council’s traffic enforcement CCTV cars were parked near the school at the start of the day and home time.

Council officers say 14 drivers were fined for parking illegally nearby on 'school keep clear' zig-zag lines.

Cabinet member for children and schools Simon Brown said pupils were “ambassadors for good behaviour” and are doing “a brilliant job”.

He added: "After the success at Belmont School road safety weeks will be rolled out across Harrow schools."
