Wreaths were laid at 11 war memorials to mark the start of the borough’s Poppy Appeal.

Mayor of Harrow Cllr Ajay Maru led ceremonies around Harrow to remember fallen servicemen and raise awareness of the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.

At Pinner Memorial park he was joined by pupils from West Lodge School and members of United Services Club.

The mayor said: “The sacrifices that are made by the brave men and women in our armed forces must not be forgotten as they give up so much to protect our freedoms.

“I encourage residents to support the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal who help to support the welfare and wellbeing of veterans and serving and ex serving personnel in the Armed Forces.

“It is a fantastic cause that I and many others support and I hope everyone will be wearing their poppy with pride.”

Earlier this month the Harrow Borough Council announced it would begin restoration work, costing £80,000, on the 11 listed memorials around the borough.

The authority says the project is part of its work to mark the centenary of WWI and ensure the memorials last another 100 years.
