A film society is celebrating 60 years of documenting the historic events of the borough.

The Harrow Cine & Video Society, which has officially changed its name to Harrow Film Makers, first made its annual newsreel of the area in 1954, the same year the borough of Harrow was created.

To celebrate the borough's birthday the club hopes to film to produce a bumper newsreel looking back at the history of Harrow this year .

It is currently digitising its historic newsreels to make them available to others over the coming months.

Looking back at the history of the organisation, club president Ken Mills, 87, said: “I first joined in 1953 and I was one of the youngest members.

“What we really want to do is encourage more people interested in making films to join us.

“Today you can get cameras that can do almost everything in one but we try and teach our members the key skills you need for making a film, such a lighting, sound recording and editing.

“One aspect of the club's work over the years I am most proud of is that we have documented the history of Harrow, and further afield, for decades.

“We have annual newsreels that the club has made and they show how Harrow and the whole borough has changed over the years.”

The club was first established as Pinner Film Society in 1951 as a group for people who enjoyed watching films.

It changed its name to the Cine Society in 1953 as its members become more interested in making their own features.

At a special general meeting earlier this month the group officially changed its name from the Harrow Cine & Video Society to Harrow Film Makers.

Mr Mills said: “The main reason we changed the name is to tell people what we do, which is make films.”

The club regularly meets to make its own films, and to watch its productions, which have won international awards over the years.

It also invites guest speakers from the film industry who offer tips about key film making skills.
