Pupils who helped pick the names of new blocks of flats were given £300 to spend on their school.

Network Housing Group gave the cash to The Village School, in Grove Park, Kingsbury, after children chose the names Hummingbird Court, Canberra Court and Amy Court for the new developments.

The class of nine students from Years 10 and 11, who all have special needs, were given the task when the housing group approached the school, which backs on to the new buildings.

Teacher Deorah Wood said: “The children were very excited by the whole naming process. I said to them this is something they will be able to look at in years to come and say 'I helped name that development'.”

The flats are close to the site of the old Stag Lane Aerodrome where the De Havilland Aircraft company build the world’s first passenger jet.

Hummingbird and Canberra were the names of aircraft manufactured on Stag Lane, while Amy Johnson, the first female pilot to fly solo to Australia, learnt to fly at the Stag Lane Aerodrome.

Matt Cattell, project manager at Network Housing Group, said: “We were very pleased the school wanted to take part. It’s a great way of involving the children who are going to be the future of the area.

“Clearly from the feedback we received, the children got quite excited about being involved in the naming of the development.”
