£80m boost for college

HARROW College is to undergo an £80million facelift after funding was approved to build a new campus in the town centre.

The new "One Harrow" campus will be built by 2010 on the Greenhill Road site with funding from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

The project is the largest single building project that has been approved by the LSC.

Dr Barbara Field, Harrow College principal, said: "We are extremely pleased that our proposal for a new building has been accepted. It is great news for the college and for the young people of Harrow."

Cllr Marilyn Ashton, chairman of Harrow strategic planning committee, said: "I welcome any improvement to education facilities in Harrow and I am heartened that the college has got the funding, that is good news, but there is still a long way to go."

Cllr Ashton also made it clear that the development of the new college would not encroach on the green space opposite Harrow station but that the new campus was part of the vision she has for the future of Harrow's town centre.

Chris Mote, leader of Harrow Council, said: "This is fantastic news for Harrow's students and teachers. It is critical that young adults have state-of-the-art facilities and the best learning environment."

Work has begun on designs for the new building by architects MacCormac Jamieson Prichard, working with Sprunt, specialists in education space planning. Drivers Jonas will manage the project alongside Harrow College's own estates and facilities team.

Harrow College will be working to bring plans together into a proposal that can be presented to Harrow Council's strategic planning committee for consideration next autumn.
