People have spoken of their “shock” at the death of an elderly woman on their “quiet” street.

Residents of Camrose Avenue, in Edgware, have been left “shocked” by a crash this morning which left the 85-year-old pedestrian dead.

The woman died after being hit by a Volkswagen van at the junction with Methuen Way at 12pm.

Lakindu Wasala, who lives in Camrose Avenue, said: “I was shocked that this had happened here. It is normally a very quiet road.

“I couldn’t believe it when I heard there had been such a bad accident.”

The air ambulance was sent to Camrose Avenue but paramedics were unable to save the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sue McPhartlin, who lives nearby, said: “It is tragic. It is just so sad – an old lady. The poor thing – what an ending.”

Another Camrose Avenue resident, said: “It was shocking. There have been accidents in the past but never like this.

“The road is really quite dangerous – because it is straight people drive much too fast.

“I think it needs some cameras and a pedestrian crossing to slow people down.”

The driver of the van has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been taken to a north London police station.

Camrose Avenue remains closed as police continue their investigations.

Buses 288 and 688 are on diversion.
