If it works, why try to fix it?

Jim Bowman has criticised Harrow Council for mending roads which do not need mending (‘Money could be better spent’, Your Views, July 22).

Whatever the merit of his case, I am reminded of an aspect of the Con/Lib Dem Government’s schools strategy which is to offer academy status to successful schools.

This will cost money, which in times of financial stringency is unnecessary expense.

The Labour Government set up academies at failing schools to change them around with good effect, but to do this with schools which are already successful is very much open to question.

The answer, of course, is that this strategy is driven by Tory dogma — to introduce selection by the back door. For this, they will commit scarce resources. But to change the status of schools which are already successful is nonsense.

If it works, don’t fix it.
