Simple moves to improve the area (From Harrow Times)

In answer to RC Baron’s question on how we improve Harrow (‘Criticism but no suggestions’, Your Views, March 4).

We must agree something needs to be done. If residents do care, perhaps the following is a start position:

Harrow Council could summons the satellite dish installation area manager to say we are fed up with the destruction of this borough’s assets by them and their agents who irresponsibly install dishes. The person should be asked why homes and flats in less affluent areas are blighted by dishes, yet when other customers object to their property being made to look run- down, the dish can be placed on the roof eaves, chimney or, out of sight from the front of the building. Companies should be instructed to no longer place dishes above the front door or window, and start a program of dish relocation. Some companies offer the same service without a dish, and this route could be made mandatory.
Concreted front gardens can be given a makeover through imaginative initiatives promoted through the Harrow People magazine, Newspaper articles and competitions to illustrate ideas and reward competitors. Estate agents could play their part by highlighting that the value of a property is based on its first impression.

Make greater use of part road, part pavement parking to reduce the need for residents to concrete their front gardens. m The maximum height and size of garden bungalows could be redefined.

Communal waste bins could be introduced, initially as a trial in locations similar to Moelyn Mews and other locations where it could benefit the residents. Harrow People could show the before and after pictures of front gardens.

Job done.
