The leader of Harrow's Labour group has denied claims of ‘institutional racism’ in his party and says the group elects its leader on the basis of competence and not race.

The comments from councillor David Perry came after the Independent Labour group today held a press conference at which members claimed there is institutional racism in the Harrow Labour group.

Councillor Perry said: “The Labour group categorically denies and would challenge the negative unfounded accusations of discrimination made against our decisions and processes, and our proven record in this area supports this.

“Every year the Labour Party holds Annual General Meetings at which all positions are elected, in a fair and transparent process.

“At these AGMs all members are encouraged to come forward and submit nominations for positions in which they feel they can make a positive contribution.

“The Labour group then elects on the basis of competence and this has always been the case. This emphasis will continue in the future.”

The claims were made by the Independent Labour group after its nine members split from the previous ruling Labour Party, with the rift deepening when the new group made claims of discrimination and racism.
