Hindus have marked the start of the Navratri festival with a noisy procession through the town centre.

More than 100 people marched from the International Siddhasram Shakti Centre, in Palmerston Road, alongside police officers to Harrow Leisure Centre, in Christchurch Avenue, on Tuesday evening.

Festival-goers banged drums, danced and wore jewellery as they moved through the town centre streets in the procession, which had been moved to the evening from its usual afternoon start.

Navratri – which literally means 'nine days' – is an important date in the Hindu calendar and symbolises the triumph of good over evil.
