Memory boxes donated to help remind Alzheimer's sufferers in Harrow

Fundraisers donated boxes designed to jog the memories of dementia sufferers in the borough this morning.
Volunteers from the Rotary Club of Northwick Park handed the memory boxes – full of pictures, news cuttings and other reminders – to Alzheimer’s Society Harrow and Hillingdon to be used in a church café.
The club decided to act after a talk by Linda Matthews, manager of the society, explained the difficulties sufferers of Alzheimer’s – the most common form of dementia – have to contend with and how boxes full of reminders can help return long-term memories.
Former Mayor of Harrow and volunteer, Eric Silver, said that the café at United Reform Church in Joel Street would help give support to people living with the condition.
He said: “It’s a place where people with Alzheimer’s can go to help them jog their memories.
“We’ve filled the boxes with all the things from the past to help people because we heard that this is a problem in Harrow that’s going to become a real issue.
“We had a visit from the society and that reminded us to do something about it and we held various fundraisers, with the money to pay for the boxes coming from that.”
