Harrow has six less emergency police cars available than last year after cuts to the police budget, figures show.

Data released after a Freedom of Information request by Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas shows that the number of vehicles available in the borough has gone down from 40 to 34 since May 2011 – a 15 per cent drop.

There are also 23 vacancies – including five PC positions and 16 PCSOs – in the borough’s police force, with almost 700 vacancies in Safer Neighbourhood Teams across London.

Mr Thomas said the figures were “worrying” and said the “secret cuts” would make policing the borough more difficult.

He added: “They are further proof of the impact of cuts in police funding and will inevitably affect the ability of police to stop crime and arrest criminals.”

The Harrow Times is waiting for a response from the Metropolitan Police.
